I first met Larry "Mr. Sticks" Crockett when I interviewed him after one of his drum clinics. We quickly became friends who have kept in contact over the years. Larry is a versatile drummer who has worked with many of the world's greatest musician's. In addition, he is a bandleader, composer, and author who has written a number of books. Today, we're taking a look at one of his more daring ventures into writing - "Sex and Drumming."

If anyone but Larry would have written this book, I would have thought it was simply a gimmick. But, knowing Larry, I knew that there must be some real substance behind the provocative title. And there is!

Throughout this unique book, Larry continually makes plausible connections between drumming and sex and he ties it all together with many examples. Examples and conclusions that can only be reached by someone with years of experience in drumming and personal relationships on the road.

Before we get started, I have to warn you that this book does contain explicit language about sex and is recommended for adults only. That said, this guide is not pornographic in nature but entertaining and educational. And it contains valuable information that will be useful to adults of all ages - especially young adults.

The Sex and Drumming Connection

As Larry states in his introduction, this isn't a book about theory or philosophy. Actually, Larry originally wrote the book as a journal of things he had been discovering for himself about sex and how it seemed to directly relate to his drumming. According to Larry, these are things that have improved both his drumming skills and his love life.

He also says that, although this book is predominantly geared toward the male drummer, there are some things that female drummers will appreciate and learn from.

When preparing this review I had to decide how deeply to delve into the specifics and give some of Larry's techniques away or to merely get you interested enough to want to check it out for yourself. I chose the latter. What follows is simply the table of contents, which provides more than a few hints of what's inside.

If the table of contents sounds interesting to you, I highly recommend that you pick up a copy of Larry's book and read it for yourself. You will be surprised at how closely related good drumming is to good sex and love.

I especially recommend this book to young adults, whether or not you're heading out on the road. It provides valuable information on both drumming and sex that can only be accumulated through experience. My son, who is in college at the time of this writing, found it extremely entertaining and informational from the standpoint of both drumming and sex.

This book is written from a unique perspective but it clearly explains the very real relationship that exists between sex and drumming. You'll find lots of food for thought here. Check it out for yourself. I think you will be pleasantly surprised!
