Famous Drummers From A to Z

This is Tiger Bill Meligari and I constantly scour the Web in search of info on your favorite drummers and percussionists. Here are the latest results from A to Z. Your complete resource to info on the most famous drummers in the world including photos, video and sound clips, bios, interviews, and everything else you need to know.

"Papa" Jo Jones
Born: October 7, 1911. Died: September, 1985. For 14 years Papa Jo was one-quarter of the All-American Rhythm Section, which included Walter Page on bass, Freddie Green on guitar and none other than Count Basie on piano. I interviewed him shortly before he passed away and he had this to say to other drummers: "Just keep on keepin' on."

Papa Jo Jones was one of the greats who pioneered some of the sock cymbal rhythms that most drummers take for granted today.

He also worked with artists like Coleman Hawkins, Jimmy Rushing, Billie Holiday, Art Tatum, Lester Young and Duke Ellington.

Here's Papa Jo's bio and discography from ArtisDirect.com.

Also check out a recording Jones made in 1973 on The Drums.
