Hey, This is Tiger Bill and I Invite YOU to Become a Part of Our Online Tribute to Joe Morello
Joe Morello 1928 - 2011
Joe is gone but his legacy will live on as long as there is a drummer left on this planet and as long people still enjoy his drumming.
I am planning a massive tribute to Joe that consists of a Video Tribute that will first debut at the online version of DrumBeat Fest 2011 in November, 2011.
Note: The deadline to receive your video has been extended to October 31st.
If you'd like to perform on this video, and I hope you will, please follow the 8 Simple Steps that follow. And thank you!
8 Steps
1: Download the MP3 music track from
the following location, you will need it to play along with. Right click and Save Link As:
http://www.tigerbill.com/media/MorelloHonorRoll.mp3
2: Once you get the music track, load it into your iPod or any MP3 player and hook it up to some headphones. You must be able to clearly hear the track in your headphones while playing your drums. This is important! Please donāt be tempted to play the track through a speaker system. I only want to hear your drums on the recorded video without the music track.
3: Set up your video flip cam or camcorder so that you can videotape yourself while playing your drumset.
4: The music track consists of a simple bass ostinato pattern (the same pattern repeated over and over) made up of 29 measures in 5/4 time. If you donāt understand how to read music, no problem. Just watch the two video demos below and you will have no problem.
5: If you understand music, then start the music track playback in your headphones and donāt play - just listen - for the first three measures. On the fourth measure click your sticks to the beat (5 clicks, one per quarter note). This is important because it will help me greatly when Iām in the editing process. On the 5th measure play either a groove or solo or whatever you want for the next four measures. Thatās measure 5 through 9. Even though the bass pattern on the music track is written in a āTake 5ā sort of jazz style, you do not have to play with a jazz feel. I want you to play using your own style, whatever that may be. Rock, pop, heavy metal or whatever! Just be creative and be yourself and let me worry about editing it together to make it all sound good!
6: From measure 10 until the end of the track, which is measure 29, I just want you to play a continuous closed roll on your snare drum.
7: This step is totally optional but, after the music track ends, you can face the camera and say anything youād like to say about Joe Morello. It could be something about personally meeting him or the effect he had on your drumming or just about anything. I canāt promise I will use this portion in the tribute but I have a limited number of slots where I can use this material. So please include it if you can! And if you donāt say it perfect or you make a mistake, donāt worry. Just say it again and I will edit it to make you look good. I promise!
8: Thatās all there is to it! Watch the playback of your video to make sure your drums sound clear and that everyone can clearly see you and then email me a copy. Try to send me a high resolution copy, meaning donāt compress it into a really small video file because it wonāt look good in the final edit. You can email your video to me at [email protected] with Morello Honor Roll as the subject. If your video is too large for email, just go to YouSendIt.com. They have a free service that lets you send large files to anyone. Donāt forget to include your name along with your file and your country and whether you want me to use the entire name or just your first name or a stage name or no name at all. Thatās up to you but I do need you to be specific. Also you need to know that by sending me your video you are giving me permission to use it in any way I see fit, which includes using the end result in my DrumBeat Fest and distributing it across social media sites on the web.
An Important Foonote:
The power of this tribute is directly connected to the number of drummers we can get to join us in it. While playing along with the music track may seem a bit limited from the standpoint that each drummer only gets a maximum of 4 measures to show off, thatās not the point of the tribute. While being part of this can certainly increase your exposure as a drummer, first and foremost, Iād like you to think of this as a collaborative effort. It is meant to show our love and respect for a truly legendary jazz drummer and its real power in the collaboration itself.
I believe this is the first time anything like this has been attempted by the drum community but Iāve already tested this on a smaller scale and I know how effective the end result can be. So Iām really excited about it!
But I canāt do it without you so, please, consider joining us for an online video tribute to Joe Morello and spread the word to all of the drummers you can!
Thanks!
Have fun and stay loose.
